Awards : Achieved 'Best Academic Result - Building Section' in 1993 from the Building Industry Federation of South Africa.

Work Experience:

South African Police (1990 - 1991).

Did compulsory National Service with the South African Police.

Adel Group of Companies (1992 - 1996).

Apprenticeship in shopfitting with Adel from 1992 - 1994.

After winning the Eastern Cape competition was selected to represent Eastern Cape at the South African National Skills Competition.

1995 and 1996 were worked as a qualified shopfitter. Was one of about four people who fitted ABSA banks all around Eastern Cape while Adel had the contract.

Premier Software (1996 - 2001).

System Administrator for software company. Maintain a server for email, ftp, telnet, file and print sharing, dial in, etc

Maintain servers at clients (both NT and Linux) premises including one in Johannesburg. Also maintained workstations connecting to these servers.

Have gained a fair knowledge of Pascal programming while working at Premier Software. Recently began working with Free Pascal on Linux.

Also have knowledge of Perl, Java, basic C, HTML and some Javascript.

Shamley Shopfitters (2001 - 2008).

Quantity Surveyor for shopfitting company. My work entails receiving of plans and costing the work required.

Due to my experience in networking and software authoring my job description also included tasks such as:-

1. Setup company web site. shamley.co.za
2. Maintain hardware and keep the network up.
3. Write custom software to assist in the costing process.

At Shamley Shopfitters I have been exposed to a new side of the shopfitting trade, as my experience at Adel was purely manufacturing.

KFC EC (2008 - Present).

IT Administrator for KFC in the Eastern Cape.

My duties include the following:-

1. Making sure all the IT infrastructure used in our 28 stores across the Eastern Cape are networked and functioning.
2. Writing applications including Wage Importer which produces a batch import file for VIP.
3. Setup OpenGroupware to be used for Corporate Email.
4. Setup a VPN so that employess can access the corporate network from home.
5. Setup an Asterisk PABX to allow stores and Head office to communicate via VOIP.

I have been commissioned to replace as much legacy proprietary software as possible with Open Source Software. Who could ask for a better job. :-)

Interests:

I take a keen interest in assisting with tuXlab installs. tuXlabs are an initiative of the Shuttleworth Foundation and are aimed mainly at schools which are under priviledged. A tuXlab is a thin client setup based on GNU/Linux. Further details can be found at the tuXlab website.

I also administer the Port Elizabeth Linux User Group (PE LUG) website.
